March is National Nutrition Month. It’s a great time to remind you of the impact your diet has on your smile. For better dental health, you should avoid excess sugar. But that can be tougher than it sounds.
This short video shows the pitfalls of choosing breakfast foods that seem pretty healthy – at least at first glance. It compares the sugar content of a glazed doughnut with options from the grocery store and fast food restaurants. You may be surprised to see that a McDonald’s menu item, Fruit and Maple Oatmeal, has two times more than sugar than the doughnut!
The video offers healthier options for all five of the surprisingly sugary items. It’s a good idea to train yourself to look at the sugar content for your favorite foods. In most cases, you’ll be able to find a substitution that is better for you and your smile.
We’re happy to discuss nutrition with you when you come for your dental exams. Daily brushing and flossing helps mitigate the effects of sugary foods. We can also suggest preventive care such as fluoride treatments if you are cavity prone.
